How To Apply Clean Car Rebate NZ

Your step-by-step guide to help you find out all about clean car discount policy

You may have read or heard a lot of news and topics about getting discounts on purchasing clean cars but have you ever wondered how it works really and how would it impact us? If you are planning to buy a car, new or used, read this before you take any action. We are going to gather all the information into this one short article for you about clean car discounts and fees, and to guide you through to get the right car with the right amount of discount.

1How do Clean Car Rebates work?

For vehicles imported from 1 April 2022, rebates and fees will be applied according to the CO2 emissions of the vehicle. Vehicles below the zero band will receive rebates while those above the zero emissions will incur fees. What we need to understand from it is that the clean car policy is not only a discount but also a fee that will impact every one of us moving forward even though you may not have any plan for a new car yet as it will be a long-term policy that the whole motor industry is subject to changes.

2How do I know which car is eligible for rebates?

There are criteria to meet to be able to apply for rebate, the easiest way to find out whether a car is eligible for a rebate or fee is to search for the car from the website https://rightcar.govt.nz/ and follow these steps.

  • Go to the "Browse Vehicles" tab and select the type of vehicle you are looking to get, for example, "Mini Bus"
  • Use the "Filter results" tag to select the "Year", "Make" or "Fuel Type" etc. if you have preferred one, or simply leave it as "Any"
  • You will now see a list of vehicles, in this case, "Mini Bus" that are eligible for clean car rebates in New Zealand.
  • Select "View Details" to check more information for anyone that you are interested in

If you already have a particular car in mind and want to check if it is eligible for a clean car rebate, simply use the search bar by typing in plate number or make/model, for example, if I would like to know whether a Honda CRV is eligible for rebate, search as the blow

Note that the list of eligible vehicles may be subject to changes over time, and the criteria required for clean car rebates may be different over time, so it is a good idea to check NZTA website for the most up-to-date information.
